What is Kundalini Yoga
There are many types of yoga and they all have the same goal: to establish unity between breath and movement: body and spirit: between you as an individual and the Universe. That’s what the word yoga means – union.
Kundalini Yoga has it’s own way of getting you there. It’s an ancient technology designed to waken the Kundalini energy that we are all born with. It’s our essence, our life force, and it lies dormant in the base chakra, at the fourth vertebrae of the spine. We need to awaken it if we want to reach our full potential, to become fully conscious and present.
Practising Kundalini Yoga can produce powerful and dramatic results very quickly. It lifts your energy levels to new peaks, aligning your whole being until you become more awake, aware and vibrantly healthy. A Kundalini session leaves you feeling fighting fit, ready and able to tackle everyday challenges with new zest.
A total workout for the body, mind and spirit, Kundalini works by freeing the flow of energy through seven power points in the body known as chakras. The word chakra translates as wheel and perhaps the best way of imagining them is as spinning vortexes at intervals along your spine, each radiating a different energy vibration that’s important to your health and happiness. By opening and balancing these centres we enable ourselves to connect to a larger source of energy, from which we have come and to which we will return.
Kundalini does this with a combination of exercise, chanting and breathing techniques that calm the mind releasing tension and stress. It builds strength and focus, giving us the spiritual armour we need to survive all that modern life throws at us.
Many of the positions and moves themselves are quite simple and easy, it is the extended repetition that challenges us. Persevere and you will find new resources of stamina you never imagined. This physical journey, accompanied by chanting and music, is extraordinarily powerful and often quite emotional. Many deep seated issues and traumas may come to the surface, and it’s not unusual to find yourself crying when you try some of the exercises. It’s also very common to feel a rush as body’s natural painkillers – the endorphins come surging to help us. It is very common for people to open up and laugh with pure joy too.
Kundalini is about training your mind as well as your body, helping not only the spine to become more flexible but also your attitude to life, balancing the endocrine system. That controls our hormone production, and helping us cope with the stresses and challenges of each day more calmly.
